Ayodhya, the land of birth of Lord Rama has been one of the top historical places in Uttar Pradesh and preferred pilgrim places especially for Hindu religion. It gives me a feeling of Nirvana when I roam on the gritty streets of Ayodhya, thinking that thousand years ago Lord Rama walked here, too.

  1. The Ram Janmabhoomi Temple

Although it is true that the Ram Janmabhoomi temple (“Rama’s birthplace”) is still in the disputed state, yet your visit to Ayodhya is not complete if you do not visit the temple. Hindus claim that the exact site of Rama’s birthplace is where the Babri Masjid once stood in the present-day. The temple and mausoleum have been in dispute for long, yet people consider themselves lucky to get a chance and stand where Lord Rama, the 7th avatar of the Hindu deity Vishnu once played and walked.

  1. The Hanuman Garhi

Speaking of the land of Lord Rama, how could we miss Lord Hanuman? Lord Hanuman is said to be the greatest devotee of Lord Rama and is believed that he stays with him till today and for the eternity to come. The Hanuman Garhi temple is dedicated to the Monkey King and is among one of the prominent places to visit in Ayodhya. It was built by the Nawab of Awadh for his devotion towards Lord Hanuman. The temple supports 70 steep steps and innumerable monkeys on the way up to the temple. Do pick up some laddus and a garland of flowers when you go into the temple.

  1. Kanak Bhawan

According to the history and the priests of Kanak Bhawan, this was a castle which was gifted to Goddess Sita after her marriage to Lord Rama by her second step-mother, Kaikeyi. The Kanak Bhawan in Ayodhya has since gone under a major reconstruction when centuries later King Vikramaditya rebuilt it in 1891.

  1. The Guptar Ghat

Coming towards the end of our holy trip to the historical places in Ayodhya, end it with a dip in the Sarayu River by visiting the Guptar Ghat. This Ghat has a very special significance in Hindu Mythology as it is said to be the place where Lord Rama drowned himself, also known as the ‘Jal Samadhi’. The best time to take a dip in the holy river is in the early hours of the day. Do not miss the evening aarti on the Ghat either.

  1. Moti Mahal

If you wish to see one of the most excellent Mughal Architecture of all the time, then Moti Mahal is your place to be at. It was one of the earliest Mughal constructions in our country dated back to the 1743 AD. Moti Mahal is said to be the castle of wife of then Nawab Shuja-Ud-Daula. According to the history, the wives of Mughal Nawab’s stayed in their own private castles and Moti Mahal is one of them.

Timings: 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM
