The Sur Sarovar bird sanctuary which is located in Agra, Uttar Pradesh is a small yet significant wildlife habitat that is home to a large number of migratory birds, freshwater organisms, flora and fauna, and luxurious vegetation. The Sur Sarovar bird sanctuary was named after the great Hindi literary poet Surdas. He was born blind. One of the main popular attractions here is the freshwater wetland which is commonly known as the Keetham Jheel. The Sur Sarovar bird sanctuary in Agra was declared a sanctuary in the year 1991. It is known for its scenic beauty, abundant flora and fauna, dense and luxuriant vegetation, rich cultural and religious heritage, and the rare experiences that it has to offer.  Visitors and tourists get to walk along the banks of a huge lake enjoy the picturesque sight and the breathtaking semi-arid surrounding.   • Summer Birds:

Sur Sarovar Bird Sanctuary which features the Keetham lake sees several Birds flocking here to dip themselves and swim in the cool waters of the lake. The bird that can be spotted here includes the spot-billed ducks, the open-billed duck, black-necked Ducks, wooly necked Ducks, whistling teals, herons, egrets of all kinds, cormorants, storks, the Indian shag, sarus, and crane.  The Sur Sarovar Bird Sanctuary brings in a large population of cranes who migrate from all over the country.

  • Colonial nesting:

The Sanctuary is the favored place for colonial nesting birds not only from the country but from abroad as well. This Bird Sanctuary has seen an ever-increasing Heronry of colonial nesting birds ever since the year 1990. Each year more than 5000 colonial nests are expertly built by the birds with the twigs, leaves and other specimens found lying around. It is an interesting and intriguing sight to see birds building their own nests and the effort and skills with which they build it. About 14 Heronry species which includes the cormorants, storks herons, white Ibis, spoonbills, and the darters go about with their creative nesting which makes the Sur Sarovar Bird Sanctuary as a unique place for birds. Apart from this, visitors also get to spot nesting activities from other common resident Birds.

  • Ticket fee:

The entry fee for an Indian per day is Rs 50, while a foreigner is required to pay Rs 350  per person per day. There is a separate entrance fee for vehicles. Vehicles such as scooters, motorcycles are charged at Rs 20 for both Indians and foreigners. Cars, jeeps and other light vehicles are charged at rupees 100 for both Indians and foreigners. Tourist buses are charged at rupees 200 for both Indians and foreigners.

The Sanctuary officers also charges a separate fee for taking pictures, Photographs, videos, and movie shots. Indian visitors with cameras, digital cameras or non-digital cameras, small movie cameras and handycams are charged rupees 500 per head per day. While foreigners with cameras, digital cameras, canon digital cameras, small movie cameras, and handycams are charged to rupees 1000 per head per day. Indian visitors with digital cameras or movie cameras are charged Rs. 5000 per head per day. While foreigners with digital cameras or movie cameras are charged rupees 10000 per head per day.

There are also separate charges for feature films which include videography per day. Indian visitors with feature films are charged Rs 1,00,000 per head per day. While foreigners with feature films are charged Rs 2,00,000 per head per day. Indian visitors with documentary films are charged Rs 25,000 per head per day, while foreigners with documentary films are charged rupees 30,000 per head per day.

Those Indian visitors who wish to utilize the forest rest house are charged rupees 300 per suite per day. While foreign visitors and tourists are charged Rs 900 per suite per day.

  • Boating on the Keetham lake:

Visitors and tourists are allowed to go boating on the Keetham lake only in permitted areas as allowed by the Bird Sanctuary authorities.

  • Location:

The Sur Sarovar Bird Sanctuary is located in Agra and stretches across 700 acres of land. The huge Keetham lake stretches across 300 acres.

  • How to reach the Sur Sarovar Bird Sanctuary:

The Sur Sarovar Bird Sanctuary is easily accessible and well connected to even the remotest places of Uttar Pradesh. This Bird Sanctuary is just 25 km away from the Agra district headquarters SSB, 60 km away from Bharatpur and 180 km away from Delhi. Tourists and visitors can easily reach the Sur Sarovar Bird Sanctuary from the Agra Delhi national highway 2.

It can also be easily reached through flights as the nearest airport which is the Agra airport is just 30 kilometers away and it is just 200 km away from the Delhi Airport.

One can also easily reach the Sur Sarovar Bird Sanctuary by train. There are plenty of trains going to and from this place. The Agra railway station is just 30 km away and the Delhi railway station is just 200 km away from this sanctuary.

Tips for visitors:

  • Visitors and tourists can wear clothes that blend in with the surrounding areas as bright colors can easily scare away the birds and animals. Some of them even tend to attack bright colors.
  • Carry binoculars and field books that identifies and describes the birds easily so that one gets to develop an eye for the birds and appreciate the beauty.
